A Chocolate Guinness Cake is currently baking in the oven. I hope it turns out as I haven't made one in years. In any case it sure is smelling good in here!

John McCrae [11 Nov 2015|08:30am]
His poem "In Flanders Fields" is still recited every year in Canada for Remembrance Day, and wear poppy pins in personal and communal commemoration of those who have sacrificed for our country.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Fable III will never be the same for Hero again [05 Dec 2013|08:33pm]
Last night I experienced the rare Gender Swap Glitch in Fable III. If you're online and the other player has a faulty internet connection, and you get abruptly disconnected, you become the opposite gender from which you started and lose most of your possessions and leases. I didn't lose my money or achievements, at least.

I restarted another online game but to my surprise found my Hero character to be a bald male and not wearing any clothes except for shorts. The other online player kicked me and, feeling much embarrassment, sent her a private message explaining what happened so she wouldn't think I was a pervert or something.

Thinking it was a temporary glitch, I returned to single player, only to find that I was still a mostly naked and bald male Hero. I was legitimately freaking out in real life, but also thought it appropriate to have my new male Hero run around the castle freaking out as well (I had to get a laugh out of the situation somehow).

After mourning the loss of my original female Hero, I composed myself and rebought some clothing, hairstyles, weapons, and leases to all the businesses and some housing. He was still married to his original husband and still had his children. However, the husband was straight and felt uneasy getting close to the male Hero, so I made the decision for them to split up and the daughter was sent to the orphanage (his son was not, as his nanny wasn't fired), where the Hero promptly readopted her.

The weird thing is, I couldn't have the Hero repurchase a home in Bowerstone Market or even the *castle* as they were now under the names of the nanny and husband, respectively. Of course, after the unfortunate divorce, my male Hero has no name to the castle at all and he can't move his son to another location.

Now, I can't even use the A button to help me in fetch quests anymore, and had to reacquire certain skills. I can't really gain guild seals as I'm already friends with most people and it would take forever to acquire them through fighting and talking to guards. If I try to access my DLC locations, the game freezes. I put 140 hours into my character and now I have to start from scratch again. It's something I will work on throughout the year.

Meanwhile, I am going to complain directly to Lionhead Studios and ask as to why this bug had never been fixed in the last three years, and especially before it became temporarily free on Xbox Live, which was how my copy was acquired. I demand compensation! (Or at minimum free DLC.)

Meanwhile, it feels surreal playing a Hero who got gender flipped, like in an anime.

Thanks to being ill for the past few days, I missed the Anime North Staff Buffet today. I was really looking forward to it, but there's always the one at Christmas and I plan to go to the first AN 2013 staff meeting. To all of you who went, I hope it was fun!

Canadian Charter's 30th Anniversary [17 Apr 2012|10:39pm]
[ mood | contemplative ]

"This anniversary marks an important step in the development of Canada's human rights policy. Building on Diefenbaker's Canadian Bill of Rights of 1960, the Constitution Act of 1982 enshrined certain rights and freedoms that had historically been at the heart of Canadian society into a constitutional document known as the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The Constitution Act of 1982 empowered our government to amend every part of Canada's Constitution, for the very first time."

My poor journal's been neglected again [18 Oct 2011|12:35pm]
[ mood | blank ]

It looks like nine months have gone in a split-second. There was so much I could have posted about but didn't get to. I may post about my past happenings sporadically over time.

I am currently (and have been for several months) looking for work, in an administrative capacity. If anyone in the Toronto area knows of anyone (reception, research, libraries, etc.) please let me know. It's been discouraging looking for so long and not having any results. I send out resumes and nobody calls me; I even went to a job fair and that effort was fruitless. I recently joined The Career Foundation for assistance, and I'm also considering the Second Career program. I hope it helps.

Anyhow, I'll keep plodding on.

Two Dave Broadfoot sightings [10 Jan 2011|04:31pm]
[ mood | relaxed ]

Video examples of Dave Broadfoot.Collapse )

Dave Broadfoot is a very witty Canadian comedian and one of the founding members of the Royal Canadian Air Farce. In the recent past I have seen him twice. The first time was on Christmas Eve where I saw him in a long line next to mine in an LCBO; the second occured today where I saw him waiting for a bus at Eglinton Station.

I would have liked to have said something to him, but I didn't wish to be a bother so I didn't approach him. Still, sighting him reminded me that I haven't heard his material in a long while; he might have been on CBC during New Year's but I happened to be out. Maybe if I see him again I'll just simply thank him for all of the laughs he has given Canadians over the years.

Russian junior hockey team gets kicked off of airplane for unruly behaviour [06 Jan 2011|01:31pm]
[ mood | critical ]

Russian team gets the boot.

I know they are excited they won, but there is still a certain decorum a team has to maintain after a game, whether they are winners or losers. Airlines do not allow drunk passengers onto airplanes for health and safety reasons; the same applies here and most of them are minors no less. The airline staff, as I have deduced from what I have read, could not assess how much alcohol the Russian team had consumed and they were still emotionally high from the win; therefore they were denied the flight. Additionally they are seen as unofficial representatives of their country and this just causes embarrassment for Russia.

I would be saying this if it had been Canada who won and behaved this way; however we will never know how they would have reacted in the first place.

CAN 3 RUS 5 [05 Jan 2011|10:58pm]
[ mood | irritated ]

I cannot comprehend this ... we were far ahead ... we were *winning* ... 3-0 in the second period ... And for Russia to score five goals in thirteen minutes in the *third* period ... is laughable. Not for Russia accomplishing this, but for Canada in letting this happen.

If the goals on either side had been more dispersed - Canada would score, then Russia, and so on - I would better accept this loss. But Canada was a different team in the third period: they kept fumbling the puck, shooting wide, delivered little defence, and icing every other shot. I hate to say it, but it's like the team was possessed by the Toronto Maple Leafs: going strong at the beginning and then slowly losing steam. Meanwhile the Russians were scrambling in the first and second periods, but became a whole new team in the third. It's like Russia pulled a "made you look" on us.

Well, both teams at certain intervals of the game pulled all of the stops, both have made it very far, but at the end of the day all the glory goes to the Russian team, and deservedly so. They haven't won gold since 2003 and they have made up for lost time.

Now excuse me while I shower the stench of shame off of me.

Edit: Here is an article about the game, with comments from readers below it.

Christmas and New Year's [03 Jan 2011|11:14pm]
[ mood | hopeful ]

Christmas for me was spent quietly, as it usually is. On Christmas Eve I spent it with family; we went to Christmas Eve Mass and afterwards we partook in our annual tradition of watching the black-and white version of 1951's A Christmas Carol starring Alistair Sim. In my opinion, no other film version compares to that one.

On Christmas Day I hung out for a while with thecrazyfinn at his friend's house, where we watched Riverworld - at least when I wasn't fawning over his friend's cat. ^^ Later I met up with qicetrini at Nathan Phillips Square to get in some Christmas Day skating.

On The Feast of St. Stephen (a.k.a. Boxing Day) I went to The Labyrinth to see if they still had that Doctor Who model I had my eye on: The Eleventh Doctor still in the Tenth Doctor's clothing after the TARDIS crashes at the end of the fourth season (yes, I'm into that show now, especially with the Tenth Doctor). Sadly it was gone, but I look ahead to other opportunities.

New Year's Eve was spent at the Duke of Kent with qicetrini and Bradley. I was very glad to ring in the new year; I have quite high expectations for 2011.

Fan Expo 2010 - Pros and Cons (no pun intended) [06 Sep 2010|01:41pm]
Once again qicetrini and I atteneded Fan Expo, which was located in the North Tower this year at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. On the way over we saw the extremely long lineup for the prepaid congoers. At first we thought we had to get in that line; imagine our relief when we found our actual line for paying at the door which wasn't nearly as long and we were only in it for about an hour. This year wristbands were used instead of badges, perhaps as a preventative measure in bootleg badges. I found it annoying since we had to keep it on for the whole weekend; any tampering to the wristband forfeits your membership. Luckily it wasn't on too tight.

What we did at Fan Expo 2010Collapse )

In the end I still enjoyed it but I don't think I will be paying $60 for a deluxe pass next year. Luckily they took credit.

Anime North Staff Buffet [06 Sep 2010|12:56pm]
Yesterday Jay, qicetrini and I went to the AN Staff Buffet at the Imperial Buffet in Mississauga. It was good to see everyone again since I haven't seen most of them since the last AN staff meeting after the convention. It was a good turnout too; about halfway through the buffet the Imperial staff had to bring in another table since so many showed up.

This year I actually ate more vegetarian than I usually do - rice, mushrooms, and vegetables - and actually got full on it! I was working my way up to the main dishes and once I was ready, I realized that I was full. ^^; On well, at least I was able to eat more dessert. Mmm, green tea ice cream. :p

I, of course, brought my camera with me and took some photos, which will be posted in my Facebook account shortly.

I also got to meet a guest of one of the staff there; he is the head producer of Sakura River, a visual novel indie company. He gave me a free copy of Fading Hearts all-ages dating sim if I make a page about it on TV Tropes, since I told him I post there a lot. Sounded like a good deal to me. :)

I look forward to the Christmas Buffet.

"Who's On First" in the 21st Century [06 Aug 2009|11:10pm]
[ mood | amused ]

I saw this in one of my Facebook friend's notes, and I wanted to share this with you. It is truly ingenious. (BTW, I swear I will make a "real" post soon.)

If Bud Abbott and Lou Costello were alive today, their infamous sketch,
'Who's on First?' might have turned out something like this:

ABBOTT: Super Duper computer store. Can I help you?

COSTELLO: Thanks I'm setting up an office in my den and I'm thinking
about buying a computer.

COSTELLO: No, the name's Lou.

ABBOTT: Your computer?

COSTELLO: I don't own a computer. I want to buy one.

COSTELLO: I told you, my name's Lou.

ABBOTT: What about Windows?

COSTELLO: Why? Will it get stuffy in here?

ABBOTT: Do you want a computer with Windows?

COSTELLO: I don't know. What will I see when I look at the windows?

ABBOTT: Wallpaper.

COSTELLO: Never mind the windows. I need a computer and software.

ABBOTT: Software for Windows?

COSTELLO: No. On the computer! I need something I can use to write
proposals, track expenses and run my business. What do you have?

ABBOTT: Office.

COSTELLO: Yeah, for my office. Can you recommend anything?

ABBOTT: I just did.

COSTELLO: You just did what?

ABBOTT: Recommend something.

COSTELLO: You recommended something?

COSTELLO: For my office?

COSTELLO: OK, what did you recommend for my office?

ABBOTT: Office.

COSTELLO: Yes, for my office!

ABBOTT: I recommend Office with Windows.

COSTELLO: I already have an office with windows! OK, let's just say I'm
sitting at my computer and I want to type a proposal. What do I need?

COSTELLO: What word?

ABBOTT: Word in Office.

COSTELLO: The only word in office is office.

ABBOTT: The Word in Office for Windows.

COSTELLO: Which word in office for windows?

ABBOTT: The Word you get when you click the blue 'W'.

COSTELLO: I'm going to click your blue 'w' if you don't start with some
straight answers. What about financial bookkeeping? You have anything I
can track my money with?

ABBOTT: Money.

COSTELLO: That's right. What do you have?

ABBOTT: Money.

COSTELLO: I need money to track my money?

ABBOTT: It comes bundled with your computer.

COSTELLO: What's bundled with my computer?

ABBOTT: Money.

COSTELLO: Money comes with my computer?

ABBOTT: Yes. No extra charge.

COSTELLO: I get a bundle of money with my computer? How much?

ABBOTT: One copy.

COSTELLO: Isn't it illegal to copy money?

ABBOTT: Microsoft gave us a license to copy Money.

COSTELLO: They can give you a license to copy money?

(A few days later)

ABBOTT: Super Duper computer store. Can I help you?

COSTELLO: How do I turn my computer off?

ABBOTT: Click on 'START'..............
